Humans cannot be ugly because God created them, and all the works of God are wonderful.
Everything you surround yourself with—what you look at, what you watch, or what you read—has an impact on your psyche. This is a fact that you cannot ignore in the fight against depression. To put it brutally:
If you feed your mind with garbage, the picture of your life resembles a landfill.
It has always been like that; it is and it will be, and here you cannot have any doubts.
Beauty reflects God’s love for us and points to Him alone.
You can observe the same portion of the landscape, for instance. The terrain is adorned with lush green grass, crisscrossed by a meandering river flowing from the distant snow-capped mountains. Here and there, scattered trees provide refuge for deer in search of shade. Nonetheless, you may perceive it in contrasting manners. In one scenario, under radiant sunshine accompanied by the joyous melodies of birdsong; while in another, beneath ominous clouds and relentless rain, a desolate scene resonates with the eerie cries of wolves. Despite gazing upon the identical location, the stark contrast in your observations becomes strikingly evident.
The first image, beautiful and putting you in a positive mood for life, is almost impossible to see for people who do not filter the information that reaches them primarily through the media, the Internet. In a time of promotion of all kinds of ugliness, degeneration, and horror films, it is difficult to reject all such information. However, you can always refrain from watching any film or program. Unfortunately, one of the worst mistakes that are made is the failure to protect children from such ugliness.
Just look at some of the fairy tales and games they now have access to, and it’s not that for adults only, but for children. It is dangerous, and builds a generation permanently falling into depression, from which the pharmaceutical companies are very happy, but we should be terrified.
Ugliness is a symbol of evil, sin, and death. It is something we should avoid and fight against. It is not physical ugliness but moral, spiritual, and emotional ugliness. Ugliness destroys our dignity, sense of worth, and hope. Ugliness makes us feel lonely, rejected, and meaningless. Ugliness kills our joy, peace, and love.
That is why it is so important to surround yourself with beauty and take care of your beauty. This is not about narcissism, vanity, or a false self-image. It is about seeing beauty in oneself and in others, in nature and in culture, in God and in people. It is about cultivating beauty in one’s body and soul, in one’s thoughts and feelings, and in one’s words and actions. It is about sharing beauty with others and inspiring them to do so.
Beauty is a cure for depression. Beauty is the source of life. Beauty is the path to God.
Unfortunately, the ugliness is reflected in today’s religious life. E.g., new churches no longer have any of the old beauty in them. They are ugly, angular, harsh, and cold.
A person should not be ugly, because God created him and all His works are wonderful. Very often, if a person appears physically ugly by human standards, he possesses goodness of heart and beauty of soul. If it is otherwise, it indicates that such a person has rejected the gifts and talents he received from God.
Nothing happens without a cause, so we should be aware that what is happening now is the work of Satan. The flood of ugliness and scariness cannot come from God. The realisation of this simple fact should open the eyes, and perhaps even this is enough to get us out of those depressive states.
In the following chapters, I will describe what kind of battle is being fought for our souls and how we should behave in order not only to survive it but also to win it. However, before we get to the battle for our souls, we must learn the meaning of the truth that determines everything in our lives.
